The black dot – Future of smartphone notch.

Remember that little black patch on the top of your mobile phone front screen? Yep the Notch.

Hey guys, recently I stumbled upon what could be the future of smartphone front screen design. When I say the future i mean the next three years beginning in 2019 of course.

When it comes to notches on smartphones we have grown to live with them like it or not – and  for those of us who might not be familiar with the notch, maybe like me you are still rocking old school notch-less monster mobile phones from 2015, here is what it looks like sitting on the left or right and most times in the middle of your front screen.

This year expect to see smart phone designs switch to the dot notch style at the top of their Bezel. As more smart phone companies design and redesign screens to achieve the maximum screen usage for its customers.

This was initially the reason for the notch. To give the feel of a full screen and hide away those annoying extras.

This vertical cross bar on the top of phone screens used to be a minor irritation for users but not anymore as the first phone to introduce the black notch was revealed.

the V10 made by LG was somehow one of the first manufactures to throw in an additional screen at the top to display things like weather and time while the phone was not in use.

And when it was being used the notch served as a shortcut to access the apps or front camera or speakers. Ignoring the entire space of the notch the apps display

However the PH-1 or Essential Phone 1 last year caught out attention with a new design for the notch.

A mobile phone maker fresh first into the market did not waste anytime in presenting itself as a competitor in smartphone design by tackling the love it or hate rectangular notch style hurriedly adopted by the big boy manufacturers like Samsung Apple, Google and the likes of them. Essentially making it obsolete three years down the line.

But fear not for the days of smartphone innovation is not yet over thanks to the brilliance by the guys at Huawei.

One of its latest flagship phones the Honor view 20 was launched and obviously included a notch but not just the regular. They have gone for something of  what i could describe as a black dot instead. Another phone with this new notch is the Huawei Nova 4.

The black dot is through an LCD display and is placed on the top left corner of the screen. As far i can tell it is not movable around corners of the screen like an accessibility icon.

But if you are one of those who gets irritated by the slightest bit of grey taking up space on your 6.4 screen, there is the option to hide the notch. You can find it in the settings option. But a little warning there as the black dot is then replaced by a solid black rectangle. So choose wisely.

Overall the dot doesn’t seem to be much of a problem when playing games or watching videos so i might be forgiven for saying there might be need for a game of spot the dot.

So in a notch shell, I’d expect to see more mobile phone companies taking up this style and adding their twist to it. Maybe placing it in the middle around the front facing camera away from any notification like time date weather or alarm and lock.

Enjoy…
