The defensive midfielder, whose contract with Die Werkself will run until the summer of 2021, reunites with his twin, Lars Bender, also a defensive midfielder, at the Bay Arena following his €15m move.

Commenting on the move, sporting director at Leverkusen, Rudi Voller, expressed delight with the signing of the “experienced and versatile” 28-year-old.

“We’re delighted that Sven has decided to sign for us,” said Rudi Völler.

“He’s an extremely experienced and versatile player, who has proved his class at Dortmund. His quality and leadership will be good for our young team,” he added.

Sven, who previously played with twin, Lars, at 1860 Munich, and together won Olympic silver in Rio de Janeiro last year, is also capable of playing in the back four.

Sven and Lars Bender will play for the same club for the first time in 8 years.

Despite seeing his career at Signal Iduna Park blighted by injuries, Leverkusen coach, Heikko Herrlich, said he had been in touch with the German international for a while now.

“I’ve been talking to him for a very long time” Herrlich said.

“His mentality and spirit make him an ideal leader on and off the pitch, just like his brother Lars,” he added.

Sven, who made just six appearances for Dortmund last season, won the Bundesliga two times with the Black and Yellows.
